JCU’s program combines full-time coursework and a full-day internship at one of our partner school sites. You will be matched with a master teacher who will guide you through each phase of classroom development: teaching, pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment.

HIGH-NEED AREAS

When asked to draw a mathematician or scientist, girls are twice as likely to draw men as they were to draw women. Data tells us that shouldn’t be so.

Nationally, math test scores for girls mirror those of boys in fourth and eighth grades; middle school girls pass algebra at higher rates than boys. In science, girls perform on par with boys and enroll in advanced science and math courses at equal rates as they move into high school.

By teaching STEM, you can inspire more girls to enter STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2017-18, only 11% of teachers in public elementary schools identified as male. You can break the cycle of too few men in elementary education, and provide an important role model for young girls and boys who have few or none.

Almost 50% of US public school students are students of color, but approximately 85% of the US public school teacher workforce is White. Research has shown that having teachers of color inspires higher achievement and better outcomes for diverse students. By becoming a teacher, you can help address inequitable outcomes in education.
